The packages in -proposed are tested and then added to the official
repositories. Empathy is now version 2.32.1-0ubuntu1.1 in Ubuntu 10.10,
and should have resolved this issue. If it did not resolve the issue for
you, please file a new bug using 'ubuntu-bug empathy' in a terminal.
Doing this after a failed attempt to use empathy will attach all
relevant logs to the bug report. Thanks in advance.
