Public bug reported: My laptop's internal mic is detected by PulseAudio, which can be verified from pavucontrol. I can also set the volume of the mic from pavucontrol.
But the mic doesn't appear in sound settings. The input tab is empty, even though it used to show my mic until Precise RC, at least. The mic, however, still works fine in all the apps I tried. But if I have to modify the volume/mute the mic, I need to use pavucontrol, since system settings doesn't work (see screenshot). I'm sure the problem lies with control center or gnome-media, since the mic shows up in pavucontrol. I'm running the Unity session, on Precise with the latest updates.
