Run this command in a terminaL:

sudo apt install tracker

Log out and log back in.

You can configure indexed folders in Settings > Search > gear button.

tracker was not installed by default in Ubuntu 17.10 because of worries
about performance. See LP: #1666676. I am hoping that it will be
reconsidered for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

  I have file search from Gnome shell enabled in settings, but it never
  finds anything that is not directly in my home directory.
