Oh, I'm afraid this is just a duplicate of the annoying #1731294

Title:
  switch-screen key has stopped working

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I often connect an external monitor to my laptop and, when I do, I use it as
the only screen, with the built-in display turned off.
This is the configuration I manually set a long time ago, and there was a
time when, by plugging in the screen, or bootin with the screen already
connected, it would automatically switch to this configuration, as one would
expect.
Then Ubuntu fucked things up as it usually do at every update, so the
behavior when plugging in the screen or booting became utterly random, but
until now, I would always be able to switch screen configurations with the
hardware keyboard shortcut (on my laptop it's fn+F6) until I get the desired
one (built-in screen turned off, external screen as the only one). Actually
there's usually an interval of time while the system is finishing the boot
process (which takes several minutes because, you know, Ubuntu) during which
the hardware switch-screen key wouldn't work properly, just switching the
built-in screen on and off (immediately) without properly switching
configurations. But then, when everything is up and running, it would start
working as expected properly switching among different screen configurations
(only built-in; builtin+external in extended desktop; mirrored; external
only)... except that it would frantically switch several times for all the
times you had been trying while finishing booting. That makes me think that the
keyboard shortcut is handled by hardware and is just a hard on-off switch for
the builtin display until something in the OS is up and running and starts
handling it.

Now, this was the usual behavior until now. It's pathetic in may ways,
but that's not the bug I'm reporting.

Now instead, after completing the boot, the screens came up as mirrored, and
the hardware switch-screens key wouldn't work (it would just turn the builtin
screen on and off while leaving the external screen at the same shitty
resolution as a mirror of the builtin one), just like it usually happens for
the first few minutes, except this time it kept (not)working this way.
I had to manually go to Display settings, turn off mirror mode, switch the
builtin screen off, AND adjust the external screen resolution to a non-idiotic
value.
And the hardware key still does nothing (not even turn on and off the builtin
screen which remains off).

I don't know if this issue will disappear at the next boot. I'm quite
confident that it will, but that doesn't make the issue any less of a bug.
