Jeffrey A. Winters:
Indonesian Economy Gets Stuck

TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: Apparently, Indonesia’s economic team hasn’t
functioned for the last ten months. The economy remains at a standstill.
However, the economic team does not bear all the blame. “The current
political situation in Indonesia damages Indonesia’s economy,” said
Jeffrey A. Winters, an American political scientist, in an interview with
TEMPO Interaktif on Monday, August 14.

In these unstable times, Jeffrey said, investors avoid Indonesia. They
prefer to invest in China or other countries. Meanwhile, macro-economic
indicators like a growing Gross Domestic Product or falling inflation
levels are not accurate barometers, Jeffrey added. “The growth rate
increases because of higher consumption. Not new investors,” he said.

Jeffrey offered no solution for reviving the economy. However, he points
to the continued presence of New Order cronies in the current government as
one source of the economic problem. The culture of
“corruption-collusion-nepotism (KKN)” is another obstacle to growth.
“Because the Soeharto’s status quo still exists, reform efforts go
nowhere,” he said. “If you want the economy to improve, arrest the New
Order ‘criminals’ first. Then destroy the old system and create some
breathing room for development.”
