doing some more testing I've realized that the problem happens because the .py and .pyc files are out of sync. My guess is that the .py files are modified so quickly that the timestamp does not change and a recompilation is not triggered. After some research I've found that the timestamp resolution depends on the filesystem (I'm doing the tests on ext3 which has a resolution of 1 second).
