Thank you, Andre. Problem turned out to be hardware: a worn out mouse. Problem went away with new mouse.

Never heard of that, but the "keyboard input vs toolbar button" behavior sounds like https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=775656 which is fixed in Evolution version 3.22.5. You could ask packagers of your distribution to backport the fix, or upgrade to a more recent version of your distribution which includes Evolution 3.22.5 or newer, or try to find some more recent third-party packages out there (Ubuntu calls that "PPA") for your distribution. andre
