I can't help with the structure/ XML part of the problem, but I can assure you that a reference page graphic is absolutely the wrong way to change the color of a table cell. In unstructured documents, you do this by applying custom shading to the cell or cells (Table > Format > Custom Ruling & Shading). How you get from a subhead element in the XML to a table cell/row with custom shading is beyond my ken, but I'm sure someone else can help with that. Richard G.
