I don't have a problem running dhclient, I have a problem with WPA. 
Initially, my rc.conf said:

ifconfig_wi0="WPA DHCP"

and I had the correct entry in my /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.  I could
not connect to my WAP until I turned off WPA, as I stated in my OP.
