Sure, it exits with STOP 2, which is the following:

  write(buffer,"(EN0.3E0)") 6.660_4
  if (buffer.ne."6.660E+0") stop 2

I modified that as:

  write(buffer,"(EN0.3E0)") 6.660_4
  if (buffer.ne."6.660E+0") then 
    print *, buffer
    stop 2
  end if

And now it prints:

 6.660               
STOP 2


So I guess it's losing the E+0 from the string?
