I've got a report of a regression in 2.7.x that has been caused by this
commit by David
Winslow (for which I cannot find a discussion, nor a ticket?):

The issue is that the validator is rejecting xml invalid names for all
catalog components, in our
case we have a store and coverage with a xml invalid name, but I don't see
a good reason
why they should be rejected:

In particular, store and coverage names are not going to be used a xml
elements,
unlike feature type ones, where in fact the issue is real.
Is it just a case of overzelous checking? This change is going to prevent
many
in the metoc world from upgrading, as the above name structure is pretty
common (coverage names are normally following some structured convention
where each element has a specific meaning (btw, the above is not valid as
a xml element name is because it starts with a number).
I'm proposing to restrict it only to FeatureType elements.
