I just read that 4K displays only refresh at 30 hz if they are connected 
through a standard HDMI cable.  Could you be seeing something along that line?

FEllI've just gone back to a (random) commit in Jan 2014 and it still flickers. 
 I can't believe it's been doing that for two years and I haven't noticed it so
