Just another point of reference, the delete key in this situation works fine on 
my system (Catalina).

But I'm not quite sure that I am understanding your issue.  In the search entry 
field, I can enter text and delete at will.

When I hit the Search button, the search entry field is blanked, so no reason 
to hit backspace.
