Probably not an OpenPGP key.  You my try

  gpg --list-packets myfile.key

to dump the packets, but this is unlikely to show something else than
running just gpg on the file.

Chech that the file is a proper OpePGP file and has been downloded
correctly.  Often FTP is not used coreclty and breaks binary files.
