There were no casualties in the fire mishap and while the extent of damaged caused was not ascertained till late evening, a source pointed out that the losses incurred due to the fire could run into several lakhs. (H) RELICS OF ST FRANCIS XAVIER SAFE: The fire, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, engulfed the roof of the residential and administrative wing on the western part of the Basilica, which housed the accommodation for the priests. The church and the revered relics of St Francis Xavier were completely unharmed by the fire. According to information, the fire broke out a few minutes prior to 2 am. One of the three priests sleeping in the rooms, Fr Anthony, is learnt to have heard noises and come out to inquire. More than 50 per cent of the building's roof, a major part of the flooring of the second floor was burnt and collapsed partially on the first floor, damaging the partitions and books, stationery and some office records, wooden furniture and other articles. (GT) 7 ROOMS, ANTIQUE FURNITURE, RARE BOOKS RUINED: Seven big rooms used as dormitories for retreat students were damaged and their rooftops completely destroyed in the fire. Besides, the antique furniture, rare handwritten books used as reference material and other precious items in the convent were also gutted in the fire. The fire was brought under control before it could spread to the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which is a world heritage monument. None was injured and no damage was done to the museum. (NT) CHURCH LEADERS SHOCKED: The blazing fire in the House of the Professed in the Basilica of Bom Jesus shocked Church leaders as the building had been recently renovated at the cost of crores of rupees by the Goa Archdiocese.While the records of the Light House (Light of the World Movement) started by Fr George D'Sa for SSC students were gutted in the fire, a sound and light programme 'Pilgrimage of the Heart' on the ground floor of the building was intact and undamaged. A Basilica committee headed by Vicar General Fr Jose Remedios Fernandes will assess the damage and initiate steps to restore the building within a few weeks. "The Archdiocese will do it at its own cost," a source said. The Church has turned down politely the government's offer to assist the restoration process. The Basilica is under the Control of Archaeological Survey of India for the purpose of maintenance while the House of the Professed is being maintained by the Archdiocese. (GT) DGP KANTH RULES OUT SABOTAGE: The Director General of Police, Mr Amodh Kanth told reporters that the Basilica is intact and no damage was done to it. He ruled out sabotage or mischief in the incident. Mr Kanth said the security cover around the church would be strengthened during the Exposition. (NT) PROBE WITHIN A WEEK: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday said that the Old Goa police would hold an inquiry into the fire to the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa within a week even as the government had decided to make fire assessment study of all the important monuments, temples, churches and other heritage sites in the State. He said that prima facie the cause of the fire was suspected to be a short circuit. (GT) EXPOSITION ON SCHEDULE: Chief Minister Parrikar said that the annexe of the Basilica of Bom Jesus which was damaged in the fire, would be restored before the commencement of the 16th Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier.He said that the restoration works will be carried out in association with the Archaeological Society of India and the Old Goa Church authorities and if required the government would provide the funds. (GT) HISTORY OF BASILICA: The church of Bom Jesus, "Good" or "Infant" Jesus, is known principally for the tomb of St Francis Xavier. Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, built in 1605, and has been declared a World Heritage Monument. In 1946, it became the first church of India to be elevated to the status of Minor Basilica. (GT) LOOK POSITIVELY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said police should look into the cases related to crimes against women in a positive manner. He was speaking after inaugurating a full-fledged Goa Police Child and Women Protection unit at Panaji.He admitted that most of the time the police do not look at these cases in a sensitive manner. (GT) CCP PLANS TO BAN BEGGING, HAWKING: The Corporation of the City of Panaji is all set to spruce up Panjim for IFFI and the Exposition and is proposing to clear all illegal structure, encroachments and illegal activities taking place within the next one month. The first on the list is to ban begging and hawking activities in the city. (H) MAYOR SEEKS BJP PERMISSION TO QUIT: Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, Ashok Naik has sought permission from senior BJP leaders to be relieved from the said post. He met North Goa MP Shripad Naik on October 21 and conveyed his sentiments and unhappiness over the spate of events during the last two months which, he said, is compelling him to quit. (H) PANAJI TO BE A SHINING CITY SOON: The cleaning of the Panaji market, eviction of beggars, clearing the hawkers and scrap-dealers, removal of old-abandoned vehicles along roads, shifting of stray dogs to another location and management of stray cattle; all within a period of around 30 days will have the capital city gleaming in time for the International Film Festival of India as well as the Exposition. This was announced on October 21 at the meeting of the Corporation of the City of Panaji by its Commissioner, Mr Suryanarayan. The CCP Mayor, Mr Ashok Naik, was cheered by the members when he called upon them to work to make Panaji city "the most beautiful city in India". (NT) LINESMEN GO ON FLASH STRIKE: The whole of Mapusa city was plunged into darkness on Thursday morning as the linesmen employed at the Electricity Dept went on a flash strike, protesting against the arrest of one of their colleagues in a chain snatching incident. (GT) COP LOSES HOLD OVER GOLD: Fearing a theft at his Porvorim residence in the absence of his family members, since they were leaving for Vaghurme (Sattari) to attend Navratri celebrations, head constable Anand Mone was carrying all gold ornaments to Vaghurme. That itself proved to be his undoing. On the night of 20 October, Anand along with his wife Mandakini and niece Jyotsna Jog left for Vaghurme. As they reached Sirsaim, dacoits decamped with their gold ornaments worth almost Rs.50,000 while they were in the process of looting a petrol pump there. The petrol pump owner was deprived of Rs.40,000. (GT) POLICE FOIL BAJRANG DAL'S 'SHOBHA YATRA': Around 500 activists (with saffron flags) assembled in the city (Karwar) and commenced their march to the Anjediva island in protest against the ban on Hindus imposed by the naval authorities prohibiting them to worship goddess Arya Durga's temple at Anjediva. Police swooped on them are arrested all the volunteers. (GT) CASES UNDER GARBAGE, SMOKING ACT: The North Goa District flying squad, in major raids against violators of the Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act and the Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act, booked as many as 60 cases on October 20. During the raids conducted in Mapusa and Pernem, fines to the tune of Rs.10,500 were collected. (H) UGUEM ROBBERY CASE: A tempo belonging to Hanumant Warang of Mapusa, a milk distributor, was proceeding to Kudal on May 22, when the tempo driver along with the cashier made a stop at the roadside to offer prayers to a local deity. They were taken by surprise when they were attacked by six persons armed with sticks and robbed of Rs.52,000. The alleged mastermind behind the robbery was former tempo driver, one Laxman Naidu of Belgaum, who planned the robbery along with seven of his friends. Pernem police have arrested the six persons. This month two historians pointed out the Taj Mahal may already be tilting and could crumble or sink if the government did not pay immediate attention to the monument's immediate surroundings. Of particular concern is the Yamuna river, which runs close to the Taj Mahal and now trickles rather than flows.
