Konkan Daiz Yatra
A Spectacular Dance Ballet

The legend Saraswati arose and thronged into the
streets of Mumbai and exulted through its waves into
the prestigious Shannmukhanand hall on 23rd October
2004 for Konkan Daiz Yatra. All the streets from
Virar, Vasai, Miraroad, Borivli, Malad, Andheri,
Jerimeri, Sakinaka, Vakola, Bandra, Dadar, Byculla,
Colaba, Wadala, Mulund, Ghatkoper, Kanjurmarg, Thane,
New Bombay led to King Circle towards a glorious new
Yatra. It was infact a mammoth crowd of Saraswati
gathered at one place in the name of Konkani
forgetting the cast, creed, dialects and geographical
differences.

It was the moment of immense joy, moment of belonging,
moment of unity and the moment of creation of history
with 3000 Konkani’s joined at one place in Mumbai for
the cause of Konkani. In fact the larger crowd who
waited till the last moment to get passes had to get
disappointed as all the passes were given out five
days prior to the show.

It was a time of excitement and thrill to see 3000
people seating and watching this great show. Claps
after claps from this huge crowd was heard as the
forgotten roars of the waves in the unearthed river
Saraswati giving new hope to Konkani. The scene of
river Saraswati enacted by the tiny tots itself was
the challenge to the people to carry on its flow.

“This is not enough” said, Mr. Albert W. D’Souza in
his presidential speech. “We need a Konkani Sahitya
Akademy and a full fledge Konkani Bhavan to work for
the cause of our people and our language. Over 40
communities speak Konkani and they are scattered all
over the coasts of Maharashtra. Though Konkani is a
minority language in the state of Maharashtra the
government has not taken enough care to develop the
language over the years. We will fight for this new
cause.” He said.

“We need to stress on one script for Konkani. If one
script is used by all communities of Konkani, the
language can see faster developments” insisted the ex
Police Commissioner and ex Anti Corruption Bureau
Director Mr. Ronald H. Mendonca.

Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Bombay Most Rev Ferdinand
J Fonseca said "it is a joy to see all Hindu, Muslim &
Christians gathered together in the name of their
mother tongue Konkani."

“Let us nurture our mother tongue and give due respect
to our Lord” said Mrs. Grace Pinto in her charismatic
speech. She also honoured Mr. Albert W. D’Souza and
his wife Mrs. Evlina A. D’Souza with the garland of
“Pangla Kolle” for the successful organization of the
show.

Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay & the chief of Education
board Most Rev Percival Joseph Fernandes, Lord Krishna
Bank CEO & MD Mr. R. M. Nayak, Music Maestro of world
fame Dr. Charles Vas SVD, Konkani Bhasha Mandal
President Mr. P. N. Shanbhag & secretary Mr. J. B.
Moraes too spoke on this vocation.

Souvenir of Konkan Daiz yatra was released on this
occasion. The ex police commissioner Mr. Ronald H.
Mendonca released the book “40 Konknni Magnni” (40
Konkani Prayers), the transliteration of Mangalorean
Konkani Prayers in to Roman script by Ancy Paladka.
This book made new record on this day by the sale of
more than 600 copies during the show. “Ami Konglish
Uloitanv” book by Mr. J. B. Sequiera was inaugurated
by Mrs. Grace Pinto. “Hanv Mhonis Zalam” book by
Pintam Derebail was inaugurated by Fr. Walter Pinto.
Known stage artist and a singer Mr. Clement Lobo was
comparer of the programme.

The Dance Ballet directed by Rev Dr Charles Vas SVD
was started by the song “Saraswatichea Sullsulleamni
Ubzoli-i tum mae” a song composed by Mr. J. B. Moraes.
Fausto V. D’Costa (Editor, Gulab Monthly) along with
his team welcomed the crowd by extending pan-podd
udok. Then there was a heartfelt welcome by different
communities of Konkani people in their own style of
richness. The story started at the banks of River
Saraswati which was a magnificent show by the tiny
tots with the ear pleasing music of the flow of river
Saraswati which was digitally recorded. The river
Saraswati was magic of attraction among the audience
who welcomed it with their unending and ear breaking
claps. The show then continued with the scene of
Krishna playing mischief with the gopi’s being one
among the gopi was a Konkani as recorded by Santh Nam
Dev 600 years ago as Ekli Konkani. Then came a
misfortune of distress, trouble, vexation & severe
affliction as the twelve-year drought rubbed river
Saraswati into dry and made all Konkani’s to scatter
around. The marginal among them seeked out refuge in
the coasts of Goa. Once again the Portuguese rule in
Goa forced them to leave their traditions, culture,
religion and language. Their ferocious inquisition
‘the religious court’ encouraged their exodus into
Mangalore and other south-costal region of India. The
only lacking incident in the show was a capture of
Mangalorean Catholics by Tippu into Srirangapattanna.

Then followed the eye catching cultural festivals of
Manddo, Dulpod, Deknni, Tonnio, Damam, Dapp, Gumat,
Vag Nach, Falki Utsav along with the celebrations of
Voji, Roce, Kazar, Uddtha Murth, Kanya dan, Bhurgiank
pallneant dovorchem, Namakaran, Monti Fest from
various communities of Konkani. A real unity was seen
when the song “Sokkod Sangata Mellia” sung by the
whole audience. The last song of the Ballet was “Ami
keli Sombromachi Konkan Daiz Yatra” composed by Mr. J.
B. Moraes. Since the whole show, the brain child of
Rev Dr Charles Vas SVD was digitally recorded and
presented live on the stage it was a different
experience for all Konkani people who were present on
the vocation. Their enjoyment was seen through their
non-stops claps of encouragement.

Since Konkani is recognized as one of the national
languages of India in the year 1992, Konkani Bhasha
Mandal the oldest and premier body of Konkani
celebrates Konkani Recognition Day every year. But
this time it was celebrated with new glory as Mrs.
Grace Pinto who was the chief guest of Konkani
Recognition Day in 2003 had invited the organisers to
hold such a mega programmes to attract all Konkani
people from Mumbai. Taking this invitation as a
positive challenge Konkani Bhasha Mandal worked very
hard for the whole one year formed a organising
committee with the leadership of award winning reputed
businessman Mr. Albert W. D’Souza and analyzed various
ways in which the awareness of the mother tongue could
be brought among Konkani People.

It was planned to hold a Mega show with the slides of
presenting the rich culture of various sects of
Konkani and to make people realize the importance of
supporting our mother tongue.

Konkani Bhasha Mandal President Mr. P. N. Shanbhag,
Chairman Advocate Pius Vas, Secretary Mr. J. B.
Moraes, Fr. Charles Vas, Mrs. Grace Pinto and number
of other dignitaries worked day and night and led its
folk to this great cause.
