Dear Selma

Reply to Message 3, Vol 6, Issue 703
Your Speech to the Global Goan Convention 2011- Preserving culture through the
arts

Thank you for sharing your uploaded speech at the Global Goan Convention 2001
at the Indian Gymkhana with us.

In your speech you said “How badly we treat our artists, our writers, our
intelligentsia; the very soul of our society”. Were you referring to yourself
here? Having
mentioned Francis Newton Souza a few times in your speech, I was amazed,
surprised, etc. etc. (I’m too polite to use the word “rude”) that it appears
you didn’t feel
it necessary to add that whilst he has passed away, his art is very much alive
and kicking and he is one of the few Goan artists that has his paintings in the
Tate
Britain! This would have provided our esteemed guests from Goa with an
opportunity to see his artistic achievement while in London, if they chose to.
Francis
Newton Souza may have encountered problems receiving support from his country
to promote his work while alive, but it looks like he has much the same problem
with his country men/women today!

For all those who wish to see Francis Newton Souza’s painting “Crucifixion”
painted in 1959, you can pay a visit to the Tate Britain at Millbank, SW1P 4RG
(Tel 020
7887 8888).

In years gone by, our ancestors for reasons of ignorance or best known to
themselves did not promote our tailors and fashion designers or you would have
seen
Rebellos, Pintos, De Souzas alongside Armani, Chanel and Versace.
Congratulations to Wendell Rodrigues from Colvale with his Goan collection of
fashions.
