I found an area in the woods today where there were about 20 strange
feeding sites. Each consisted of a 4-6 inch cave in the snow surrounded
by piles of nut shells. The base of a nearby large tree was also
surrounded walnut and hickory shells like I'm used to seeing from
squirrel feeding. Have I missed over the years Gray/Fox squirrels
feeding from the warm comfort of snow caves? Is this an atypical
reaction to deep, prolonged cold weather? Red squirrels spend time
underground, but they aren't at this location and they focus on spruce
seeds, right? Am I missing a different easy answer?
Responses should probably reach me off-list. Thanks!
