I too found the System Data Set Definitions manual to be quite useful. As Mark pointed out it went away with z/OS 1.7. You can get the last version at http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/iea2g500.pdf The info may be 'old', but I believe it is still mostly relevant.
