Backup Exec System Recovery Server is hands down the best software out
there. Note that this is not traditional Backup Exec, but a re-branded
product that they purchased from PowerQuest about 5 years ago and used
to be sold as Live State Recovery.
It is both bare-metal recovery, and sector-based backup, meaning that
there is no such thing as a locked file (it's like ghosting). It
integrates with Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy to take an almost instant
point in time image of the system without needing to stop services.
Software such as MS SQL 2005 and Exchange 2005 are backed up
consistently using this technology, and earlier versions of this
software and other databases can generally be backed up consistently
without stopping the services. Recoveries are such a breeze, and there
is hardly anything to configure outside of the schedules. It also
supports dissimilar hardware recovery, drive imaging, and the backup
images can even be mounted by VMware. There are no add-on modules to
purchase, and you can buy it OEM for about $650. Here's a link to the
proper version on Google:

Sorry for the off-topic post, but with the expertise on this list I'm hoping
for some advice if anyone has a minute.
We are in need for some new backup software for our network (about 8 Windows
2003 servers). We had been using ArcServe (version 9, they are now on 11)
and I'm not set on staying with that. Money is an object, but I want
something reliable too. We will be using a combination of NAS and tapes
for off-site storage, so that support is necessary. No Exchange to worry
about, but we do run SQL Server 2000 on 2 of the machines. So it would be
great if it could handle that but not an absolute necessity.
I've looked at Backup Assist, Backup Exec, and Genie Soft.
If anyone has any thoughts on these, or something else, I'd really
appreciate it!
Thanks!
Todd
