Eruptions at Mount Merapi appear to besubsiding and many of the 30,000 displaced residentsare returning to their homes, even as more bodies continue to be found.Let’s hope for the safety of those residents returning to their homes (orwhat’s left of them) that Mount Merapi does not again escalate witheruptions.

This is a yearly sight inthe lead up to the Muslim celebration of Idul Adha, also known as the ‘dayof sacrifice’. Practiced throughout the Muslim world, it commemoratesProphet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice everything for God, includingthe life of his son Ishmael. God apparently intervened though, andsubstituted Ishmael with a sheep instead. Muslims therefore commemoratethis by sacrificing an animal and distributing its meat amongst family,friends and as an act of charity, to those underprivileged.
