You are using a VERY OLD version of Adobe Reader there - definitely NOT Reader 
9.  Looks more like Reader 7 or 8.

Depends on what programs your OS has registered or what media/MIME type.  
Acrobat/Reader simply ask the OS for what player(s) are registered for what 
types and sees if they are known and reliable.  For example, on Windows for MP4 
we prefer QuickTime natively but will fallback to Windows Media Player.

Have a look at the book, chapter 16.3.1 and listing 16.15. That should suffice 
for a proof of concept.
