Review Comment:
   This could be simplified to `if (groupProtocol == GroupProtocol.CONSUMER)` 
if we work with the `GroupProtocol` object instead of a string version. We 
truly only need the string when passing it into the consumer prop 
`GROUP_PROTOCOL_CONFIG`  above.
