Hi All I agree, no way can they be lace bobbins as any of us know them... however....
In Elizabethan times in the UK bones were carved with holes slightly bigger than this, but the item was around the same size.... the centre was stuffed with sheeps wool and they were worn inside the clothing to catch the fleas, lice etc....
