I am submitting some changes/updates to the FAQ docid_1400 and feel
that with the number of developers that it should affect, that approval
via the list was the quickest and best way to make it available for
changes and approval.

Feel free to comment on the list or to me personally concerning this.

################ start of FAQ #################################

       Dachstein

It is easy to use, and will automatically configure machines on your
internal network. Dachstein has built-in firewall/filtering and also
provides a local DNS cache, which reduces your reliance on your ISP's
server and can speed up internet access. The main drawback is the 1680K
disk format, but the image is self-extracting, making it easy to work
with.

       Oxygen

This is a newer variation, and does not have as much of a following as
the other variations. It was designed to be used not only as a
firewall, but also as a network debugging tool or a system rescue disk.
It incudes Data Disks which are really nothing more than disks with
sets of packages on them, ready for loading into the Oxygen base system.

       Bering

This is a new release, that unlike the other releases uses the newer
2.4.x kernel series and iptables for filtering and firewalling. Bering
was based off of Dachstein, so much of the functionality is very
similar between these two branches, though there is several notable
differences between several of the packages and the network
configuration (which was redone from scratch).
The Shorewall firewall is built in for firewalling and
filtering with iptables.

       Packet Filter

This is another new release, that is not an actual release when
considered on the bottom line. What Packet Filter really is boils down
to more of an "enclosure" for other LEAF releases to run within. It
offers a menu to select different networking and configuration options
during the boot process that allows for loading different systems to be
selected from on the fly. Network configuration test beds, a LEAF
developer environment, and 5 to 10 minute rapid deployment network
configuration are some of the primary uses of Packet Filter. All LEAF
releases have been run on Packet Filter. It is probably noteable that
Packet Filter is intended for more experienced LEAF users.

If linux isn't the answer, you've probably got the wrong question!
