I re-bibisected based on comment 4 using these steps:
1.) create a new table.
2.) remove the setting "Allow table to split across pages and columns"
3.) apply a table - autoformat

where table break was applied starting in LO 3.6 somewhere in the range

I'm removing REGRESSION because I don't think it applies here.
What probably needs to happen is that the built-in styles should NOT specify a
table-split property. That way whatever is applied to the table would remain.
(But that is probably much easier said than done - likely the setting is not
implemented as "optional".) However, when a user-defined style is created, it
ought to capture this setting.
