ppp + password setup

Hello,

I am using linux for a ppp server with mgetty.
The samples and docs show the following setup should enable any user to
use his passwd entry to ppp login into the server
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets:
*      hostname        ""

and 
/AutoPPP/ -    a_ppp   /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login
in /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config
however this does not work. I get authentication failed...

Have anyone got a clue ?

I am using RH5.2.
