indeed, it's for taking control over a single screen, much like
PCanywhere, not for remote access to apps.

as any X application will be too. especially heavily graphic ones
(Emacs, Netscape...)

Exceed or Xwin-32

ofcourse. config your xdm to allow your clients' fixed IPs.
