don't know about Linux workstations (there was always the problem of
clashing with the Matakh software collection) but I can tell you that
back in 1995 I installed Linii at Gilo Highschool in Jerusalem, while
reln and roji installed it at Leyada (both were the first two schools
with Internet connection in Israel that year). Then followed the Ramat
Gan project, I think 2 years later.

there are other community projects that will be glad for such
volunteers, btw. If any Jerusalemites are interested, there's a project
called Lev Yerushalayim, I can get you the contact for the project
leader - a volunteer project for extracuricular computer ed for children
in the shabbier parts of the downtown. He contacted me a year ago about
hardware donations (though I could not help him at the time), but maybe
he'll also be open to hear some ideas about FOSS as well.
