Trying it this time my ssh connection died and the machine would not respond to ping. So I hooked up a serial console and rebooted. Trying startx the second time from ttyC0 made even the serial on tty0 go dead. On this machine it is not a question of X going bad once in a while, X is compleatly useless as one can not log out and needs to use reboot instead. :-(
