substitution and /e modifier

Trying to get the /e modifier to work under modperl, but for some reason, I feel like I've read somewhere that there are problems with it...  Anyways...I can't get it to work.  Get some funky output.

Can anyone tell me if "s/$string/&function/eg" is supposed to work under modperl?  If not, has anyone come up with an alternative method??

Any help is appreciated.
