I think I'm going to have to abandon the app model for deploying the Office\Lync updates.
As an alternative I'm going to use a task sequence to install the client, then trigger a Software Update Scan cycle, followed by triggering a Software Update Deployment Evaluation cycle. If anyone has any other recommendations for installing Office updates AFTER a client install I'm all ears!
