release of GAUL(TM) - the Genetic Algorithm Utility Library, a leading
open-source programming library for evolutionary computation. GAUL
0.1846 contains significant enhancements to its features and usability.
This is the first version to officially support the MS Windows
environment, in addition to the prior supported UNIX and UNIX-like
operating systems. An already impressive set of features are further
enhanced by the new version of GAUL. Support for the MS Windows
platform bolsters a long-time aim of the GAUL project to create a
robust and portable framework for evolutionary algorithms. "Development
of a native Windows version of GAUL is a major milestone," says Stewart
Adcock, Lead Developer of the GAUL project. "Programmers requiring a
feature-complete, but portable, framework for evolutionary computation
now have the open-source GAUL as a viable option." GAUL is already
applied in many important domains, including protein structure
prediction and drug discovery. With release of this new version, GAUL

release of Miranda IM. Miranda IM is a free multi protocol instant
messenger client for Windows designed to be resource efficient and

Miranda IM extremely flexible. Only the most basic features are built

[0]Telstra, Australia's largest Telco, is switching to Linux and open
source on the desktop. Their pilot has been quite successful, and
improved stability has been noticed. On trial are Star Office, Gnome,
Mozilla and Wyse. Spending AUD$1.5 Billion a year on IT, means Telstra
using Open Source is a massive boost to Open Source developers and
support professionals. Not mentioned in the Article is that Telstra
also just Dumped IBM Global Services, and will be running IT in-house
again! Telstra will be hiring Linux-savvy people I think..."

Balloonists Attempt World Altitude Record

the balloon altitude world record. [2]Qinetiq 1 is scheduled to launch
tomorrow, 2nd September 2003, from the coast of Cornwall, UK, and aims
to reach 132,000 feet or 25 miles in a flight that could last 12 hours.
The balloon is so big (1,250 feet tall) that it should be visible from
most of the UK, Ireland and Western France as it climbs. Good luck to

this question has been nagging me for about the past week or so. I have
a personal server running Slackware 8 with a custom-compiled Apache
1.3.27 (with the appropriate mod_perl) and MySQL 4.0.13. This server is
currently running the LiveJournal server code and works quite well at
this. I'm interested in attempting to set up slash for personal use
(the Livejournal code is running for personal use as well), and herein
lies the question. Can slash be run on the same server in another
VirtualHost without having a separate apache installation/process and
doing some fancy trick with mod_rewrite? Or am I asking too much? I
will be happy to provide any further info anyone needs through e-mail
