If I understand your desired result, the following should
work.
(1) Load STL file
(2) Make a clip and use red as solid color
(3) Add new clip filter to the Original STL datum set and invoke the
same clipping sequence as before, but select "[+] Inside Out"
(4) You should now have two separate STL objects. You can control
the color, mesh lines, visibility, etc of the individual STL
objects.

It's like a copy and paste of all settings of a view.

background, then left click in the other view.

do you know a way to duplicate a Layout, in GUI or
python?
This would be useful when you want to have different
Layouts with slightly different color bar settings,
for example.
