I had this kind of problem with an older kernel (.18), which wasn't able to guess the appropriate driver for the card. By diffing .18 and .21, I was able to find the appropriate model name (3stack in my case). (To be put under /etc/modprobe.d, in a file containing e.g.: "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack") > Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Since you already have .21, maybe it could be worth a try to check whether your card is correctly recognized by it, and that you don't have to specify the appropriate modelname.
