AFAICT, that is (or was) due to gcc-defaults's maintainer not including
Arthur's patch so that gdc points to the right location. I seem to
recall it broke (or was breaking) more or less all D-related packages.

Looks like:
| gcc-defaults (1.62) unstable; urgency=low
|   * Add gdc, make gdc-4.1 the default (Arthur Loiret). Closes: #456596.

I'd say just depend on gdc unless you need features from a specific gdc
version. You don't specify any version on gcc or g++, and let
build-essential (that is: gcc and g++) let the job for you. Looks to me
that doing the same for gdc makes sense.
