As a result of my Ubuntu pre-FF rush, and because upstream provides a .zip, we
have now ended up with a different orig.tar.gz in Ubuntu (I admit, it's my
fault), which means that a sync will be impossible until the next upstream
release.

This problem could have been avoided if there was a get-orig-source rule in
debian/rules to repack the upstream zip into a tar.gz in a consistent manner.
So, please add it!

No, it couldn't have been.

I don't mind adding it, but your reason behind such a rule is broken. More than that, orig tar repackaging is not a good reason to add such a rule and since, usually is straight forward, it doesn't make any sense to add it.
