In my opinion it never makes sense to distribute broken symlinks,
even if technically possible.

German Debian mirror is not responding currently and main one is dead
slow, so I give up on investigating grep and gzip right now - but I bet
they do as I propose: create symlinks in upstream install process, so
that the upstream tarball has no symlinks and the Debian packaging
process only deals with non-broken symlinks. But we'll see about that
later... :-)
