More progress: The libtool error is related to the --tags parameter. The generated libtool script defines only the tag CXX and the generated Makefile.in use --tag=CC.
Changing the many Makfile.in that invoke libtool to use CXX instead of CC builds the package to completion. Now I'm trying to figure out whether the problem is in autoconf or if there's anything being set wrongly. P.
