As far as I can see, we expose the "Metadata" catalog field, but just the XML 
blob.

You are suggesting to parse it directly, right?

The only "problem" with that is that if we do it on the core it means adding 
an extra dependency. 

Or you don't mean the "Metadata" catalog field?
