There seems to be two functionally equivalent lines in the configure script
https://svn.r-project.org/R/trunk/configure:
...
--with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld [default=no]
--with-x use the X Window System
--with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld default=no
...
These seems to come from the macro files
m4/librool.m4
m4/gettext-lib.m4
I assume that to be consistent, one of these should be removed, and the
other look
something like
--with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld [no]
