Did you try using the updated version via the ppa listed?

As far as I can remember, I used the PPA version of sane. It was on a friends 
computer, so I can't look at it.

    Sorry from my side too.

    It worked for me as described in the thread with a fresh install of Ubuntu 
18.04. I too installed ubuntu-unity-desktop and worked from that surface.
