If you want to use USB, you should use SANE 1.0.14 to avoid problems. With Linux kernel 2.6 and maybe depending on the distribution in use the handling of USB-devices had changed. Very slow scans could have occured up to I/O-errors. hp-backend in SANE 1.0.14 should work around these problems. No problems with SCSI.
