St?phane, one thing to add - while trying to debug the 'genesys' backend (by setting SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS) first I've got was SIGSEGV. The reason was simple - the test system has /tmp mounted read-only and fclose() with NULL argument caused that. The patch is attached, should I commit that myself or wait for your feedback?
