Reinhard, thanks for the logs. Please check out https://github.com/kkaempf/sane-backends.git. The 'kkaempf' branch is one commit on top of current sane-backends#master. This version gets rid of the 'flags' column in pieusb.conf and evaluates the inquiry data instead. Compile with 'make', install with 'sudo make install' and then run xsane. Good luck !
