[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2009-12-10 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, thanks. It turns out the only thing that's needed in order to
reproduce this problem is to have an empty /etc/resolv.conf; somehow my
earlier testing didn't turn this up, but now that I have this I can
reproduce the error regardless of the samba config.

Which let me find the problem with the fix in karmic-proposed:
NetworkManager helpfully doesn't set a proper value for the $ADDRFAM
variable, it sets it to NetworkManager instead. Now that I know this,
I'll have an updated package uploaded to -proposed shortly.

2009-12-10 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: samba

After installation with the daily build (20091027.2) ubuntu server i386 cd
there is no nmbd running on my system. The logfile tells me that the daemons
was startet but there is no process. The /var/run/samba/nmbd.pid file is still
there but the pid from this file is not there. If i reboot the machine i can
reproduce this.
smbd and winbind are running as normal.

Please tell me what i can do to help you.

  Karmic release note:

Samba nmbd daemon not started during boot

Upon boot a karmic system with samba installed will not have the nmbd
daemon running. A workaround is to restart the samba service once the
system a finished booting. A fix for this issue should be provided in a
  post-release update.

+
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1.install samba 3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 on a system whose wireless network is
managed with network manager, on a network with both ipv6 and ipv4 support.
+ 2. dissociate from the network using the 'disconnect' option in nm-applet.
+ 3. $ sudo service samba stop
+ 4. $ sudo service samba start
+ 5. verify that the nmbd process is not running.
+ 6. reconnect to the wireless.
+ 7. verify that the nmbd process is still not running.
+ 8. install samba 3.4.0-3ubuntu5.3
+ 9. repeat steps 2-6
+ 10. verify that the nmbd process is now running.

[Bug 492734] Re: ntpd profile in Xubuntu 8.04 LTS is unconfined on boot

2009-12-10 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I can't reproduce this in 8.04 LTS. The scripts in rcS start before rc2,
so the script ordering is correct. The only time this condition will
occur is if ntpd is started before AppArmor, or the profile is removed
from the kernel then added back while ntpd is running.

Aquina-- as a workaround, you can restart ntpd in /etc/rc.local, but it
would be best if you could boot your kernel without 'quiet splash' and
see when ntpd is starting. You might also look in /etc/network and
/etc/dhcp3 to see if there are any scripts that are starting it when a
network interface is comming up.

[Bug 488835] Re: MIR for irqbalance

2009-12-10 Thread Kees Cook
I would like to see this using either libcap2 or libcap-ng in the build-

amount of porting (there is a single use of the libcap-ng routines).
Beyond that, it looks totally fine to me. +1 on the use of a
capabilities library.

I never changed the start order and as you already said the orderng is
correct. Further I noticed (on Xubuntu 8.04) and Ubuntu Server 8.04 NTP
being started and stopped during the boot proccess. I always thought it
was a normal behavior. ;-) What I found in /etc/network/if-

to satisfy obscure dependencies) surprised me! Is that the default
script? I never changed anything in /etc/network/ or /etc/dhcp3/ (using

[Bug 456808] Re: Karmic-Networking (SAMBA) just does not work, even with detailed attention.

2009-12-10 Thread floid
Related observations, as I try to stalk down the Launchpad bug that
surely must exist for the apparent CUPS/samba Upstart race*:

Nautilus will show browsable items via smb://ip_address or
smb://dns_name (where, if anyone is confused, ip_address would be e.g.
192.168.1.64 and dns_name could be mymachine.local - or localhost for
127.0.0.1);

Whichever SMB stack Nautilus is using does *not* seem to be doing
netbios name resolution properly at the moment, at least on my machine
and network. This is made confusing because it does retrieve the browse
tree of workgroups and netbios names, but falls over with a less-than-
descriptive error (Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share
list from server - well, yes, but apparently because it's not finding
the proper address for the server) if you double-click on any individual
host.

So, for determinism in testing, you might want to stick with IP
addresses there.

* The apparent race is evidenced by log.smbd entries such as:
[2009/12/10 11:26:10, 0] printing/print_cups.c:103(cups_connect)
Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost:631 - Connection refused
after a reboot, so you're probably also better off testing with shared folders
than with printers [which, if you're relying on samba to pick up from CUPS,
won't appear until you give samba a restart so it can talk to a CUPS that's
finished loading].

[Bug 492639] Re: newaliases fails on a system with no IPv4 address configured

2009-12-10 Thread Teun
The solution to this is to add

inet_protocols = all

to main.cf

It would be useful to allow other protocols than just IPv4 in the default
config, so the install of postfix doesn't fail on 'newaliases' when IPv4 is
unavailable. Also, a better error message would be useful.

[Bug 493781] Re: Karmic: Bind9 startup script fails after upgrade

It looks like you're running bind in a chroot but you haven't changed apparmor
profile to suite this setup.
Ubuntu ships bind9 with an apparmor profile, not a chroot. If you change its
configuration to run in a chroot, you must obviously also change the apparmor
configuration so that it matches your specific way of doing things.
Closing as Invalid, as this is not a bug.

[Bug 491288] Re: File corruption after copying files via samba from Karmic to Karmic

2009-12-10 Thread Ernst
I think this bug deserves a higher priority, because it seems the copy
process finishes successfully, but people end up in having corrupted
files. I think this behavior is easily repeated by other people and
could do a lot of harm.

So please, set the priority to 'critical' (or high). For example, bug
#453579 which also involves data loss has status critical! So this bug
deserves such priority too.

[Bug 450645] Re: Problem install slapd

2009-12-10 Thread Jay
I've just had the same experience.

I ran slapd in heavy trace mode and it seemed to be complaining about
and olcAccess attribute - I resolved thiss down to

r...@netsrv01:/etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn=config# cat
/etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn\=config/olcDatabase\=\{0\}config.ldif | grep \{
dn: olcDatabase={0}config
olcDatabase: {0}config
olcAccess: {0}to * by * none
olcAccess: to * by dn.exact=cn=localroot,cn=config manage by * break

---

I think it isn't happy with access rules with no number, so to add the
number, I edited the confilg file entry to the following :-

olcAccess: {1}to * by dn.exact=cn=localroot,cn=config manage by * break

I can then sucessfully start slapd.

[Bug 449589] Re: Alsa mixer Master Front volume resets to minimum on startup

2009-12-10 Thread Alex Shulgin
Hi, seems like one of the recent pulseaudio updates from ubuntu-audio-
dev PPA fixed the problem for me.

Sorry, it was premature. After restart, the problem is still here.

That time I saw volume not reset to zero after restart was the time I
was forced to cold-reset the machine, so it ultimately must be some
shutdown script which is zeroing the volume level.

[Bug 494904] [NEW] Ubuntuone fails to start on machine startup

2009-12-10 Thread mark clews
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Ubuntuone fails to start on machine startup - also falls to start when
called manually. I don't know if apport has attached the right info for
this bug. I've tried recently to report three seperate bugs several
times and each time the launchpad site has failed with an OOPS message.
Apologies if the attached details are for a seperate bug.

[Bug 494830] Re: Mythbuntu install is not properly configuring mythtv user in mysql

2009-12-10 Thread Mario Limonciello
So looking at the syslog, this is a direct side effect of bug 430224.
We're trying to start mysql from within the chroot, but it's an upstart
job, so this isn't as doable anymore.

[Bug 410991] Re: gnome-do battery docklet states no battery found on my laptop, recognizes AC-power

2009-12-10 Thread Robert Dyer
Docky 1 (the Do theme version of Docky) has reached the end of its
maintenance period and is no longer being supported. Docky 2 (the stand-
alone application) is a complete rewrite and thus may or may not be
affected by this bug.

Please feel free to install Docky 2 (PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net

http://do.davebsd.com/wiki/Installing_Docky) and see if your bug still
occurs. If it does, please file the bug against lp:docky (not lp:do!).

The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.

[Bug 351754] Re: Gnome-system-monitor crashes due to missing icon

2009-12-10 Thread Sebastian Wiegand
Encountered same problem: gnome-system-monitor shows up and closes again after
few seconds.
This only happens if there is a gnome-terminal open.
system-monitor seems to need a icon file called Terminal.svg (upper case T),
which is not available, but terminal.svg (lower case) is.
After creating symlink system-monitor works again.
I recently removed package xfce4-terminal, which holds the upper case
Terminal.svg file, which system-monitor now seems to miss.

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2009-12-10 Thread Grondr
Daniel: If this bug is truly independent of PulseAudio, then why does
renaming /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg change the behavior?
If your argument is that libcanberra is looking at that file, then why
is it necessary to remove a -PA- cache file to fix the bell after
renaming the file back? Are you saying that libcanberra is dependent
upon and/or writing to files that appear to be owned by PA?

Note that I can repeat all these behaviors from either the 32- or 64-bit
LiveCD, using its default settings, which I -assume- means it's using
metacity and not compiz. By default, module-x11-bell appears to be
commented out, as I said above. So who exactly is stealing X bell
events? And how do we -stop- it from doing so?

Robert, in response to various items:
(a) The reason you don't seem to need the rmmod/modprobe fandango is that
you've been confining your experiments to gnome (or metacity, or whatever).
Try booting in recovery mode and logging into an X-less shell. Assuming you do
-not- have pcspkr blacklisted, then lsmod | grep pcs at that point should show
it. But if you hit rubout at the start of a line in that shell, you'll hear
the bell out your line-out, not from the motherboard speaker. If you
rmmod/modprobe, -then- a rubout there will -not- come out of line-out and
-will- come out of the motherboard. Furthermore, if you type xinit (hence
getting into X but not gnome/metacity), you get the same behavior (you can also
try rebooting and waiting to do the rmmod/modprobe until you xinit if you'd
like to reproduce it the same way). Note that the X bell will have a different
pitch than the non-X bell, which has a different pitch than the motherboard
bell---three pitches in all. But if you do the fandango, you'll get the
motherboard bell, whether you're in X or not. [And note -weird- thing below!]
(b) I think you're right that bug #430203, which I cited as the slow bell,
did make it into Karmic---I looked at bell.ogg in Audacity and the entire
sample is only 200ms long, and it's got audio for all of it. But the
gnome/metacity bell is still not firing above 1 Hz, so there's a
bug/rate-limiter in there -somewhere-.

WEIRD THING #1: I noticed that, if you're -not- in gnome/metacity
(e.g., either directly in an X-less shell, or in the shell that xinit
gives you), -and- if you've booted with pcspkr -not- blacklisted (so
it's loaded) but have -not- done the rmmod/modprobe fandango (so your
bell is still being intercepted and is coming out of line-out instead of
the motherboard), THE FIRST BELL AFTER AN INACTIVE PERIOD VANISHES. In
other words, you're sitting at en empty line in the shell. You hit
rubout. You hear NOTHING. You wait a couple seconds. You continue to
hear nothing. You hit rubout again. NOW you hear a bell! In fact, I
can repeatably cause non-motherboard bell events to VANISH as long as I
hit rubout no more frequently than about once every six seconds. If I
hit it more frequently than that, the first one after a long gap
vanishes, and the rest of them come through. [Note that this might be
slightly racy---while I was testing, I managed to hear a bell and then
-not- hear one from a rubout less than half a second later, but that's
rare.]

Note that this obviously-buggy behavior may possibly have influenced my
test results, at least---when I was doing prior testing, I didn't hammer
on the rubout key or whatever---if I heard no bell the first time, i
assumed it was dead, not that I had to try again within six seconds to
find out for sure! Sheesh.

[I believe that if you're actually in gnome/metacity, the inactive-
vanishing-bell bug doesn't manifest---I currently have my line-out
connected and I'm doing workaround #2, running xkbevd -bg, and I hit
rubout on an empty shell line that had been sitting there for ten
minutes. I heard a bloop from line-out and a beep from the motherboard
speaker. Note, however, that if it's been more than a few seconds, the
bloop is delayed at least a second compared to the motherboard; if it's
within a second or two, the start of the bloop is maybe only 300-500ms
behind the start of the motherboard beep.]

WEIRD THING #2: If you -are- getting the motherboard bell (meaning
you've done the fandango), holding down rubout in an X-less shell gives
you the bell at what seems to be the key-repeat rate, maybe 10-20Hz.
But if you're in X (e.g., via xinit, not gnome/metacity), holding down
rubout gives you a bell that's only running at about 2Hz. The duty
cycle of the X-less bell is close to 100%, but the duty cycle of the X
bell is closer to 30-50%. (They seem to have about the same -duration-
when you're just getting one of them at a time, so I guess the X-less
bell is interrupting itself when you hold rubout down, possibly so as
not to pile up a huge backlog---see below.)

By way of comparison, my 5.04 Hoary machine (yes, that old) gets this
right, -even in gnome-: holding down rubout gives me a 10-20Hz stream
of motherboard

[Bug 321668] Re: [intrepid] Once disabled, wireless cannot be enabled. (Intel Pro wireless)

2009-12-10 Thread ^_Pepe_^
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
