[AG-TECH] Yet another test.

2004-11-23 Thread David Bowler
Hi,
I have upgraded the software on our node and I am hoping to test it this
afternoon, between 14.00 and 15.00. (GMT) The venue I am testing in will be
the ANL room. I hope some people will be able to visit. I am interested in the
sound quality from and to our node.

[AG-TECH] AGTK2.3 for MacOS X

2004-11-23 Thread Dean W. Nobles
Hello -

I've download/installed the AGTK for MacOS X and it seems to work pretty well.
I had some troubles importing my certificate initially, but managed to get past
that. There are apparently none of the mbone tools (vic and rat) distributed
with the tookit, or at least I haven't been able to locate them yet. And I
haven't managed to find a binary on the net for either that's been ported to
MacOS. Does anyone on the list have either a pointer to binaries for vic rat
or information about getting them running under MacOS X?

Thanks.

Re: [AG-TECH] Whiteboard for AG

2004-11-23 Thread Derek Piper

Thank you for shedding light on the subject :)
I'm wondering this though, how do AccessGrid and MLB work together
since MLB appears to need it's own multicast port. It should be possible
to add it as a service, yes? Does anyone have an AccessGrid service that
will tie MLB into an AG session? MLB looks like it does a lot that the
AG client does (particpant list etc.), so maybe that's overly
complicated for what AccessGrid would need.
The Shared Image Viewer is much more like what I was wanting to find, a
nice simple app. A GUI 'palette' etc. would be nice (Dave, if you're
reading :) :)). The only problem I've found is I can never seem to clear
the 'whiteboard' on the remote sides, the venue seems to 'remember' all
the markup that was ever in the session, even if the 'erase venue
markup' is checked. You're right it's nearly there though.

Thanks,

Derek

 Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has used the LBNL or UCL whiteboard
programs ('wb' or 'wbd' respectively) with AccessGrid sessions. They
don't appear to be maintained any more though. Are there any good
whiteboard solutions out there for use on the AccessGrid?

 Derek,

When we first started doing AG stuff here in Australia, a few sites
played with MLB (Media Lecture Board). Its really only due to lack of
demand by users that we haven't perservered. I notice that there was a
new release for Windows Linux in May 2004, so perhaps its still a
 viable project. Its at:
 http://www.informatik.uni-mannheim.de/pi4/projects/mlb/

Also (perhaps a bit out of left field), I've been looking at Dave
 Semeraro's Shared Image Viewer at:
 http://cherokee.ncsa.uiuc.edu/~semeraro/Stupid_AG_Tricks/default.htm

Although its meant for sharing views of images, it also has a mark up
mechanism i.e. anyone in the session can draw on the image and this
drawing is seen by all the participants. Although the mark up stuff is
still in very early stages of its development, it strikes me that this
combination of image viewer and mark up mechanism is really the
beginning of a whiteboard style of program.

The current Shared Image Viewer is all written in wxPython, so is
completely Windows Linux compatible. Unfortunately the Windows Linux
AG 2.3 software releases use different wxPython versions, which will
affect (badly) most Linux AG users trying the SharedImageViewer. There
is a Share Image Viewer version which fixes this problem at:
 http://www.ap-accessgrid.org/AG2/siv.html
which I'm hoping will be included in Dave's official release.

Re: Fw: [AG-TECH] multinode?

2004-11-23 Thread Ti Leggett
The Access Grid is based off of the Globus toolkit currently. The Globus
toolkit is one toolkit developed to enable the creation and use of
grids. Primarily what the AG uses of the Globus toolkit are the secure
connections (hence the need for certificates) and data transfer/storage
(i.e., GridFTP). By itself, the AGTk does not allow the job submission,
etc; however, since it's based on the Globus toolkit adding those
services or shared applications is fairly trivial. Derek has the right
description in regards to the AG enabling people to interact the way
that Globus and grid toolkits enable computers/clusters to interact.

That being said, I believe there has been work as part of the Scientific
Workspaces of the Future (SWOF) project to create an AG shared
application or service that allows an AG user to start globus jobs on a
remote cluster using data stored in the AG data store and collect data
back to the AG data store.

For my own understanding of it, I didn't think that grid-computing
(TeraGrid) and AccessGrid were the same sorts of things. To my mind,
'AccessGrid' is a colaborative tool, any number of people can interact
with each other. Grid computing on the other hand is .. well, any number
of *computers* 'interacting' with each other, i.e. job/message passing.
People might use the AccessGrid to talk about projects like TeraGrid,
but I don't believe they are as closely related as you mention.
By nodes 'working', the subject I thought was that of running
AccessGrid audio, video and display services on machines of either
platform (Windows/Linux). In that manner, either platform works for each
service. There may be performance differences, but they will both do a job.
Of course I am happy to be enlightened about any of this by anyone more
 knowledgable :)

Chris is right, all combinations work. Python and C are cross-platform
