[MLL]Enemy at the Gates -- a critique
Warning! Plot details blatantly exposed! People considering seeing the Hollywood blockbuster view of the battle of Stalingrad, "Enemy at the Gates", should pause to consider spending $10 to watch a relentlessly anti-Communist tirade. The young heroes are beautiful; the officers and commissars are grotesquely ugly. Despite the technically brilliant reconstruction of the epic scale of Stalingrad, and a realistic depiction of the efficient brutality of the Nazi killing machine, the film centers around the vilification of Communism. Red Army soldiers are either heroic, naive, or terrified, but the Communists are uniformly bad. During the opening sequence, barely-armed Red Army soldiers are rushed across the Volga to counter-attack the Nazi's on the right bank. Soldiers who jump overboard to escape Nazi air attacks are shot as cowards by commissars. When the infantry charges into German machine gun fire and are mowed down, the few who attempt to retreat are shot by commissars with machine guns (why the best weapons are given to commissars in the rear rather than assault troops is unexplained). When Khruschchev (!) arrives on the scene to turn things around, he gives a pistol to the quaking general in command and suggests he shoot himself to "save paperwork". Why this soldier, knowing he is about to be unjustly executed, doesn't put a bullet in the arrogant Party official before putting one in his own head, is also a mystery. The story centers around an ambitious young Jewish commissar, Danilov, his friend the simple peasant sharpshooter, Vassili, and their mutual love interest, Tania. Danilov is saved by Vassili's marksmanship, and begins to exploit his heroism to boost morale in a propaganda war, setting him up as a target for the Germans. The barely literate Vassili (apparently after 20 years of socialist revolution, peasants are still not being taught to read) goes along with this out of a sense of duty. The model-beautiful Tania, a German-speaking Jewish intellectual in the militia, was taught to shoot by her Zionist grandfather who told her that "the only motherland worth defending is Palestine" (Communist participation in the Palestinian _intifadah_ of today should be kept out of mind, of course). Initially suspected of treason by Danilov because of her German books, he is relieved to learn of her Moscow education and takes her under his wing at headquarters in order to sniff at her nervously. Upon learning that her parents, along with many other Jews, were put on a train to be shot by the Germans (apparently at Stalin's behest), she enlists in the same sniper unit as Vassili. Naturally she falls in love with the handsome Vassili rather than the self-deluded, assimilated Danilov. (In Hollywood's world view, the only time ethnic assimilation is a bad thing is when it occurs under socialism.) Vassili is now being hunted by Germany's top sniper, the aristocratic Konig, and is briefly partnered with a cynical, anti-Communist marksman who was trained in German under Konig during the period of German-Russian cooperation and is subsequently imprisoned and tortured for being a German agent, before being put back in uniform. The hapless Vassili's plight is more grist for Danilov's propaganda mill, who sees it as "class struggle in its purest form". Unfortunately for Danilov, Khruschchev is growing impatient with Vassili's delay in dispatching Konig, and suggests that Danilov will be killed if positive results are not quickly achieved. Danilov goes to far as to use a young boy to spy on Konig, setting him up for the kill even after the German sniper gives him fair warning. Rather than tell the boy's mother of his death as a hero, he tells her the boy is a traitor who is working for the Germans. Once again the overriding theme of Soviet lambs sent to the slaughter by Communist Judas goats is apparent. When Danilov learns of Tania's love for Vassili, his jealousy causes him to accuse Vassili of treason, a death sentence.
