getting debian derivate into a debian-edu network

2024-05-13 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi,

I've been looking for a brief description on how to get a workstation
with a debian derivate (here mx-/av-linux) to act like a normal
debianedu workstation with home directories, user login to ldap, etc.

As I didn't find anything, started with installing tasksel and
education-tasks. Then started tasksel and chose 'Debian Edu networked
workstation packages'.

for ldap server I chose 'ldap://10.0.2.2/'
defaultsearchbase "dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no
real for Kerberos 'goKrbRealm'
kerberos server for realm '10.0.2.2'
administration server for realm '10.0.2.2'

Am I right so far?

next should be name resolving services, but which to choose?

Any hints on this an on the upcoming next parameters?

Would be nice, if defaults matching for tjener were offered.

Kind regards

Re: Debian Edu 12 - Call for Testing

2024-03-17 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi,

wanted to install a (roaming) workstation today. But: there is no
installation feature in the pxe over IPv4 menu :-(

just

Diskless Workstation (server's SquashFS image)
Plain X2Go Thin Client (64-Bit, NFS rootfs)
Memory test
Enter iPXE configuration
Drop to iPXE Shell
Boot from the first local disk
Exit iPXE and continue BIOS boot

Did I miss something during/after installation of tjener because:

Re: What to do with d-i on armel?

Fairly late, but just to avoid the impression there aren't any left:
Yes, here.

But that's not an objection against plans in Debian kernel and/or d-i,
I'm using my own kernel, and should I ever have the need of a new
installation, I know how to debootstrap and the rest.

Besides, the hardware is a Seagate DockStar, so

Architecture: armv5tel
   Byte Order: Little Endian
CPU(s): 1
   On-line CPU(s) list: 0
Vendor ID: Marvell
   Model name: Feroceon-88FR131

and 128 Mbytes of RAM. Running Debian stable already requires some hacks
to not end up in thrashing, I might do a presentation "Running Debian on
small systems" some day about it.

In summary, I'm glad Debian keeps supporting this device - but I'm
aware the good times are in the past and it will very likely become
e-waste before the hardware dies. If not Debian ends the support, the
Linux kernel will.

eth* names are no persistent and may change at any boot.
But ethernet interface should get predictable names like enpXsY or enoX.
In /proc/interrupts we can see enp1s0.

Thank you for the epiphany!

randomized encrypted partitions default to 'delete partition' 'yes';
after choosing 'no' the first time it should default to 'no'

By "randomized" do you mean "plain dm-crypt with random key" ?

yes

The only choice of extended filesystems to format the randomized
encrypted partition with is ext2, which the d-i writes to /etc/fstab.
But the d-i actually formats to ext4, so I end up in emergency mode on
reboot

the d-i also misses to write the 'tmp' parameter for the randomized
encrypted ext4 formatted partition in /etc/crypttab

These two remind me of Bug#995108 ("d-i: partman-crypto: plain dm-crypt

Re: Debian Edu 12 - Call for Testing

2024-02-26 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi Mike,

despite your suggestions, I tested on physical hardware:

Installation from >
http://get.debian.org/cdimage/release/current/amd64/iso-bd/debian-edu-12.5.0-amd64-BD-1.iso

failed with multiple checksum errors; see (part of) install_log below

Installation from >
http://get.debian.org/cdimage/release/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-edu-12.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso

seemed to work fine at first, despite eth0 and eth1 got swapped during
reboot. Is it the correct way to swap it back in /etc/network/interfaces?

After doing that and working on GOsa, I happened to run apt update and
got lots of messages, claiming:

Splitting up /var/lib/apt/lists/deb.debian.org_debian_dists_*_InRelease
into data and signature failed

- see apt_update_log below

Guess, that could be fixed by renewing
 /var/cache/bind/managed-keys.bind* ?

Managed finally to install without connection to my network from
 >
http://get.debian.org/cdimage/release/current/amd64/iso-bd/debian-edu-12.5.0-amd64-BD-1.iso

, fixing the swap of eth0 and eth1 and reloading
/var/cache/bind/managed-keys.bind*
, so apt update works w/o errors

I have a mostly running system!

Only problem: Can't import my users via .csv
Any hints on this?

Thanks for all the work of the Debian-Edu team!

Kind regards

That is really strange. If I did install Debian 12, it offered me a
list of different file systems, including ext2/3/4.

It does on non-crypt partitions, but not if I choose 'physical volume
for encryption' there; then afterwards I only have the choices to use it
as ext2, swap or lvm or leave it unused for the encrypted partition.

Despite that the partition in fact is getting formatted ext4, so the
entry ext2 in /etc/fstab leads into emergency mode.

Does the installer format it as ext4, but shows ext2 and places that in
fstab?
Or do you format it manually?

The installer does format it as ext4, but shows ext2 and places that in
fstab, what ends up in emergency mode. That's why I'm here

randomized keys. I propose switching to 'no', when selecting

Why? A user can rather easy select what he wants.

As I said: My opinion; if you miss setting 'no' you have to wait a lot

Further I can select ext2 or swap for partition format.

That is really strange. swap is only for the special-purpose swap
partition.

Yes, I choose it for the swap partition

I use ext2 for /var/tmp, but - in /etc/crypttab the marker 'tmp' is
missing for the /var/tmp partition

Which marker?

This one:
frank@pc:~$ cat /etc/crypttab
sda4_crypt /dev/sda4 /dev/urandom cipher=aes-xts-
plain64,size=256,swap,discard
sda5_crypt /dev/sda5 /dev/urandom cipher=aes-xts-
plain64,size=256,tmp,discard
 ^^^

crypttab is only for decrypting the partition and creating a device
file for the encrypted one.

- in /etc/fstab ext2 is set instead of ext4, that cryptsetup
defaults to. So on reboot I end up in emergency mode.

If you format it in ext2, choose that. Or was that an automatic
decision by the installer?

I only choose ext2 for formatting the encrypted partition, because
nothing else is offered. Despite that the partition in fact is getting
formatted ext4, so the entry ext2 in /etc/fstab leads into emergency mode.

I think the partitioning tool in installer should offer to format the
encrypted partition in ext4, as LUKS (?) does, instead of ext2 and must
write ext4 to /etc/fstab, as this is, how it ends up.

which package to file a bug report ?

the partition tool in debian installer offers me randomized keys for
that and has 'delete partition' set to 'yes', which costs lot of time,

What package have I to file the bug report against?

Please apologize my poor english.

Understandably. Due to a huge PHP 8.x transition backlog in GOsa²

no login on diskless-workstations

2023-03-15 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi,

I can't login on diskless-workstations neither on .intern nor on ltsp.

What I've done:
Installed DebianEdu 11 main server, workstation and ltsp server from
debian-edu-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso

on a RAID5 array with 5 hdd and seperate /boot partition
Saved /etc/network/interfaces during installation, since it gets
replaced with a not working eth1 ip v6 address instead of 192.168.0.254/24.

Restored /etc/network/interfaces before rebooting.
Waited after reboot, 'til RAID5 / x2go stuff stop being busy.
Ran /usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/subnet-change -n 192.168.250.0/24
to change my subnet to the one, offered by our school board.

Rebooted immediate
Stopped service named and restarted after deleting /var/cache/bind/key*
to get access the web

What works:
Log in on tjener as the user, set up during installation.

What does not work:
Log in as that user graphical on diskless workstations 192.168.250.130
(hostname ltsp130) nor 192.168.0.22 (ltsp22)

Changing to console 1 I can log in, getting
'No directory, logging in with HOME=/'

/skole is mounted on both

Why is /skole/tjener/home0 not?

And why are there start jobs running on the diskless workstations ,
dealing with sda4 & sdb2-sde2 (the ones used in tjener as swap
partitions) and tjener_vg-* ?

I doubt, it happens because of subnet-change, since I have the same
problem on two running installations with default 10.0.0.0/8 net, where
I don't use the installed ltsp server.

Any hints, where to look?

changing netmask of debianedu network

2022-05-30 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi Folks,

the city of oldenburg 'reinvented' all our network installation with
several vlans, whereat my router (a fritzbox) gets an external
192.168.n.n IP address and works as gateway.intern 10.0.0.1 for my
10.0.0.0/8 net.
As I have to reach IPs 10.16.n.n in another vlan I need to reduce my
netmask from 255.0.0.0 to 255.255.192.0

What is the proposed way for debian edu to do this?

I found matching entries in /etc/network/interfaces (which I may have
edited), doing ldapvi and the same ones in /etc/ldap/gosa-server.ldif
and /etc/ldap/ipnetworks.ldif
I guess the database I see with ldapvi is generated from entries in
/etc/ldap/ ?

But I remember former discussions on changing the address range of
skolelinux being not that simple.

However I didn't find helpfull information in the list archiv nor on my
tjener https://www/

Is there someone, who can point me out the right instruction?

No idea what is going on myself, I must admit. :)

What a pity, I had all my hopes on you ;-)

Might be something like this known issue:
https://bugs.debian.org/983216

Seams xou're right.

So I'm uncertain whether to follow the workaround.

Guess I first give it another try with a more current netinstall image:
I just found I used debian-edu-11.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso from last november.

I'll report later.

No effect. My ISP (ewetel) doesn't tell anything about DNS's.

How did you test this? Did you remember to reload bind after each
change?

Shure, I even rebootet tjener to be save

On tjener I edited etc/bind/named.conf.options
root@tjener:~# vi /etc/bind/named.conf.options
forwarders {
8.8.8.8;
};

restarted tjener
and did

root@tjener:~# ping -c1 debian.org
ping: debian.org: Der Name oder der Dienst ist nicht bekannt

Is for example 'host vg.no 8.8.8.8' working on the main server?

with a unchanged/changed etc/bind/named.conf.options: same result

So my approach would be to get the named three DNS's in
/etc/resolv.conf, but I have no idea where to force that.

This approach would not work, as the requried DNS entries provied by the
main server would not be resolvable on the external DNS servers.

O.k.

So I have no further idea, except the
DNS-Rebind-Protektion of the FRITZ!Box. It allows to enter exceptions,
but entering tjener.intern and webcache.intern there doesn't change
anything.

Hi Petter,

I tried that with 10.0.0.1, 185.150.99.255 and, to go safe, 8.8.8.8
No effect. My ISP (ewetel) doesn't tell anything about DNS's.

And, with dhcp disabled on the router, WLAN- and LAN-clients as well as
DI of the network-installer work fine with 10.0.0.0/8 IP address,
default gateway 10.0.0.1 and DNS entries 10.0.0.2, 10.0.0.1 and
185.150.99.255

Only after installation tjener has replaced the three DNS's by one:
127.0.0.1 and get's no contact outside the LAN. If I replace the entrie
127.0.0.1 in /etc/network by 10.0.0.1 I get outside, but gosa isn't
useable from the LAN.

So my approach would be to get the named three DNS's in
/etc/resolv.conf, but I have no idea where to force that.

the dhcp server on gateway (FRITZ!Box 7490) was definitely stopped
before installation and stayed so. I installed from the netinstall image
by entering network configuration manually when the automatic
configuration failed due to missing dhcp server. That's the problem; why
are urls resolved during installation but not after it?

Perhaps your ISP block direct DNS lookups, so you need to tell the main
server DNS to forward its lookups via your ISPs server, ref

If generic DNS traffic is blocked out of your network and you need to
use some specific DNS server to look up internet hosts, you need to
tell the DNS server to use this server as its "forwarder". Update
/etc/bind/named.conf.options and specify the IP address of the DNS
   server to use.

during installation /etc/resolv.conf looks like
root@tjener:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
search fritz.box
nameserver 10.0.0.1
nameserver 185.150.99.255

and after installation
root@tjener:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by
resolvconf(8)

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
# 127.0.0.53 is the systemd-resolved stub resolver.
# run "resolvectl status" to see details about the actual nameservers.

nameserver 127.0.0.1

I suspect it ought to look like this:
search intern #the local domain
nameserver 127.0.0.1 #or maybe 10.0.2.2 ?
nameserver 10.0.0.1
nameserver 185.150.99.255

or do I misunderstand this?

Did you read the installation instructions in the manual on how to set
up the gateway?

It sound a bit like you have two competing DHCP servers, and neither is
giving you the setup you want.

swap partitions as well as the one with /var/tmp, I face a minor problem:

d-i offers ext2, swap, lvm and none as fileystems for encrypted
partitions and writes "ext2" in the new fstab for my new /var/tmp.
BUT:the manpage for crypttab tells that cryptsetups formats it with ext4
> tmp=

Führt mkfs mit dem Dateisystem auf dem erstellten Gerät
   aus. Vorgabe ist ext4.

and so the new system can't mount /var/tmp until I correct the fstab entry.

Where do I file a bug report to?

Kind regards

Moin Wolfgang,

thank you. I tried to run with

btw.: are upper/lower cases correct?

Next I try to change the named parameters in the script (lines 37 and 41).

I'll report.

Thanks to Wolfgang from > debian-...@lists.debian.org

the following did the trick:

IMO this is not a network card issue.
I guess renaming the interface names would help.

Only do the following if the system isn't used by anyone else...

(0) Put down the MAC addresses of eth3 and eth4 (eth4 should be eth0 and
 eth3 should be eth1 later)
(1) Remove 'net.ifnames=0' from the kernel command line in /etc/default/grub
(2) Run 'update-grub'
(3) Reboot. 'ip a' will show you the persistent network interface names
(probably something like enpXsY, where Y is the slot name) and MACs
(4) Add MAC matching lines at the begin of /etc/network/interfaces, e.g.:
rename enp0s3=eth0
rename enp0s8=eth1
(5) Reboot and check if everything works, otherwise fix the renaming lines

Maybe the netgroup cache has been corrupted for whatever reason?

As you are using Stretch, the 'debian-edu-nscd-netgroup-cache' tool
should still be available. Run 'debian-edu-nscd-netgroup-cache disable'

(Running 'debian-edu-nscd-netgroup-cache enable' would re-enable netgroup

If that fails, you need to check /etc/exports on TJENER.

On the IServ solution clients so far happened to be Windows machines.
But, since XP's no longer supported, I now have a computer room with 17

As I got a hint about ltsp under IServ in the IServ forum >

netboot.tar.gz for DebianEdu/Skolelinux?

2019-01-23 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi!

For Debian there is something like

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/stretch/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/netboot.tar.gz

available.

Is there something similar for DebianEdu/Skolelinux?
As I try to build a DebianEdu/Skolelinux package for our IServ opsi
server, I need initrd and linux from such tarball.

Well... /etc isn't missing, at least.

When I run "strace /sbin/ldconfig" on my system, I see this line:

rename("/etc/ld.so.cache~", "/etc/ld.so.cache") = 0

So, it seems that your ldconfig is generating the /etc/ld.so.cache~ file,
or at least a partial one (12288 is a suspiciously ROUND number, being
precisely 3 times 4 kilobytes).  And then ... something bad happens
before

it can rename it to /etc/ld.so.cache.  Or finish writing it.

Are you out of disk space?  Granted, I would have expected a DIFFERENT
error message in that case, but it's a thing to check.

You might consider simply copying the /usr/bin/strace file from a
different Debian system onto this one, just so you can run it.

OK.  I happen to have Debian Stretch in a virtual machine for testing
purposes.

strace is in /usr/bin on there.  I copied it to the host and ran it.

AFAIK the bare install will still call home: every time you connect to
a wifi network it performs an HTTP request to a Google server in order to
detect whether the local connection gives you access to the internet or
not (and if not, it presumes it's a captive portal and offers you to
launch a browser to sign in).

I didn't install google 'services', so there is only some device
statistics communication with lineageos.org, which can be disabled in
the privacy menu.

Anyway I doubt, any lineageos powered device would have "2-4 USB ports"

Correct, maybe the following could be of help.

Please check /etc/environment on the main server:

Run 'cat /etc/environment', the content should be:

http_proxy=http://webcache:3128
ftp_proxy=http://webcache:3128
https_proxy=http://webcache:3128

Maybe the content is corrupted (webcache:3128 missing).

Run '/usr/share/debian-edu-config/tools/update-proxy-from-wpad' to fix
it.

Run 'debian-edu-pxeinstall' to regenerate
the /etc/debian-edu/www/debian-edu-install.dat file

This file should now contain the right proxy settings.

that did the trick. But my productiv system still misses those Entries

problems with using the archive mirror.

Indeed, on konsole 4, I found the last two wget instructions:
wget ... http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/Release...
ends in
INFO: mirror does not have any suite symlinks

And next
wget ... http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/stretch/Release...
results in
Warning **: mirror does not support the specified release (stretch)

On my produktiv system 9.6 installation on the same notebook works.

Where do I start to look?

Did you uninstall wpad-mini before trying to install wpad?
Uninstalling wpad-mini should free up ~200kB. Maybe it's enough for wpad
to fit.

I tried that, but as on TP-Link TL-WA701ND v1 i saw a _reduced_ amount
of free memory! On TL-WA701ND i just tried removing wpad-mini. That
reduced free space from 40 to 32kb.

I also saw this effect on TL-MR3420 V2.3 and szill wasn't able to
install wpad due to unsufficient mem.

So my idea was: take the .config used to build [1], edit it, disabling
most ppp- and usb-entries and copying it to ImageBuilder-directory. Then
make image PROFILE=??? PACKAGE="wpad -wpad-mini -ppp -ppp-pppoe".

But where to get the .config ?

[OpenWrt-Users] Image too large for further packet

2016-05-26 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi,

i'm using openwrt a long time, but am new in building images.

Actually i have 3 TP-Link TL-MR3420 V2.3 flashed with [1]

As i need wpad installed i have the problem that this image doesn't
leave enough space :-(

So i got the image generator [2]

and tried some profiles, but none was satisfying.

What i want is to build an image like the "official" [1], but without
ppp*- and usb*-support, so i get the space, needed to install wpad.

Any hints for a solution?

composed entirely of packages from the current Debian stable release, Debian
 8
 Jessie.

(As most reading this will know, Debian Jessie hasn't actually been
 released
by now. The release is still in progress but should finish later today ;)

We expect to make a final release of Debian Edu Jessie in the coming weeks,
timed with the first point release of Debian Jessie. Upgrades from this beta

Debian Edu - sometimes also known as Skolelinux - is a complete operating
system for schools, universities and other organisations. Through its pre-
prepared installation profiles administrators can install servers,
workstations and laptops which will work in harmony on the school network.
With Debian Edu, the teachers themselves or their technical support staff can
roll out a complete multi-user, multi-machine study environment within hours
 or days.

Debian Edu is already in use at several hundred schools all over the world,
particularly in Germany, Spain and Norway. Installations come with hundreds
 of
applications pre-installed, plus the whole Debian archive of thousands of
 compatible packages within easy reach.

For those who want to give Debian Edu Jessie a try, download and installation
instructions are available, including detailed instructions in the manual
explaining the first steps, such as setting up a network or adding users.
Please note that the password for the user your prompted for during
installation must have a length of at least 5 characters!

It's not this bug. I have two NICs with different chipsets. The one i

listed as eth1 in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules afterwards.

This is the wrong approach. Instead, edit
/etc/bind/named.conf.options and list the IP of your upstream DNS
resolver in the forwarders block. This way you keep the internal DNS
names intact while also getting Internet connectivity.

stand-alone:
started installation with defaults, german and auto-partitioning
after chosing stand-alone-machine (after editing
/usr/bin/edu-eatmydata-install) installation finished without any
question. Cloned the machine with clonezilla, changed hostname and
both run well with KDE.

Very good. :)

[Petter Reinholdtsen]

The propagation times for packages from unstable to testing in Debian
is now enforced to 10 days, making it harder to test the Debian Edu
status. To work around this, I have set up a new APT source with the
latest version of our packages, and created a preseeding file to
enable it.

This repo is now used by default with our testing ISO, and there is no
need to enable it manually. But I have still only built for amd64, so
i386 will lack some packages (currently only our task packages, I
believe).

But the great news is that the installer is no longer broken. The bug
was not kernel version skew but in apt. I reported the bug as #765046,
but others reported the bug too as it affected the daily build d-i
images in Debian. See #765458 for more details.

Anyway, this mean you can fetch the latest ISO, use for example rsync
from

ftp.skolelinux.no::cd-edu-testing-nolocal-netinst/debian-edu-amd64-i386-NETINST-1.iso

and it should work out of the box. Please test and let us know how it
work for you.

I've now seen the problem where eth0 suddenly become eth1, and reported
the bug as #765577. I hope the udev maintainers can help us figure out
why udev write duplicate entries in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-presisten-net.rules

The status as we know it for the next version of Debian Edu is still
shown on URL: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Status/Jessie .
Please update it and report bugs to bugs.debian.org for problems you
find. :)

I believe we now are ready to publish the first alpha release of Debian
Edu. For that to happen we need to write a release announcement, copy
the ISO to a location where it isn't overwritten and send out the
announcement. A draft text is started on
URL: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/ReleaseNotes/Jessie . See the
Wheezy alpha release texts for example on what this can look like.
Please help make it complete enough for us to send it. :)

This is the wrong approach. Instead, edit
/etc/bind/named.conf.options and list the IP of your upstream DNS
resolver in the forwarders block. This way you keep the internal DNS
names intact while also getting Internet connectivity.

Hi Petter!

Thx for this great discription.

I happened to install 1 tjener+ltsp and 2 stand-alone-machines. Here's
my report:

tjener:
started on my home-server with desktop=xfce and chose german and
auto-partitioning
left the pc after chosing tjener/ltsp (after editing
/usr/bin/edu-eatmydata-install) for _very_ slow operation (ASUS
mainboard with AMD E-350)
didn'get the question for grub
after reboot (next day) had to re-order networkinterfaces in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
and fix dns-nameserver entry in
/etc/network/interfaces
from 127.0.0.1 to 10.0.0.1 to get connected to internet
education-desktop-xfce was already installed
started apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade and again left the machine
Till now, i had no time for testing xfce-environment

stand-alone:
started installation with defaults, german and auto-partitioning
after chosing stand-alone-machine (after editing
/usr/bin/edu-eatmydata-install) installation finished without any
question. Cloned the machine with clonezilla, changed hostname and both
run well with KDE.

 Hi.

The status of the Jessie system is tracked on
URL: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Status/Jessie , and there are
several fatal problems blocking testing. But if you want to test
anyway, here is a recipe on how to get the installation limping along.

 First, download the ISO
 URL:
 ftp://ftp.skolelinux.no/cd-edu-testing-nolocal-netinst/debian-edu-amd64-i386-NETINST-1.iso

(or http, or rsync). The ISO build is currently broken, so we do not
get a new ISO every 12 hours or so, but thankfully the ISO we got is
 able to install.

When you get to the profile question, go to tty2 (Alt-Ctrl-F2), run

   nano /usr/bin/edu-eatmydata-install

and add 'exit 0' as the second line, disabling the eatmydata
 optimization.

When you get the grub question at the end, answer /dev/sda (or if this
do not work, figure out what your correct value would be. All my
tests need /dev/sda, so I have no advice if it do not fit your need.

If you installed a profile including a graphical desktop, log in as
root after the initial boot from hard drive, and install the
education-desktop-XXX metapackage. XXX can be kde, gnome, lxde, xfce
or mate. If you want several desktop options, install more than one
metapackage. Once this is done, reboot and you should have a working
 graphical login screen.

I believe the ISO build will start working on two days when the new
tasksel package enter testing and Steve McIntyre get a chance to
update the debian-cd git repository. The eatmydata, grub and desktop
issues are already fixed in unstable and testing, and should show up
on the ISO as soon as the ISO build start working again.

I hope this get you going with the installation testing, as we are
quickly running out of time trying to get our Jessie based
installation ready before the distribution freeze in a month.

Three successful printings, then.

No , the first is the one, who didn't get on paper.

Also, edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, change loglevel to debug, print and
look at /var/log/cups/error_log. You might want to compress it and post

Done, but printing the same .pdf from evince went fine this time and
no error.log in /var/log/cups/. I'll try again tomorrow and let you

No error_log? I've only encountered that by deleting the log just before
printing something. LogLevel debug is intended to give copious output
for all print jobs.

Sorry my fault, looked at wrong place. Logfile starts at

The previous log ends [28/Aug/2013:10:36:35 +0200], so the time when the
problem happened isn't logged at all :-(

I tried to reproduce the problem this morning, but now printing .pdf
from evince as frank worked.

So i think we can close this thread.

Thanks for your help

strange Cups behavior

2013-09-03 Thread Frank Weißer

Hi out there!

I'm running Debian Testing with latest updates and got strange Cups
behavior:

As user frank, member of lp and lpadmin, i tried to print a .pdf to
http://localhost:631/printers/UTAX_TA_CLP_3521_CLP_4521

and after a little while Cups says job completed, printer idle. But
there's no paper-output at the printer :-(
I tried reprint job in Cups, authentivcated as root and - voila - got
my paper.

Afterwords Cups says 2 pages printed, the printer guesses right and
tells me 1 page printed, but where is the lost page?

Should i cut the cable to look for it?

Or any better suggestions?
