Bug#689857: Please suggest winbind

2012-10-07 Thread Luk Claes
On 10/07/2012 12:51 PM, Christian PERRIER wrote:
 Quoting Thomas Hood (jdth...@gmail.com):

 The Description mentions:

 For use in an NT4 domain or Active Directory realm,
 you will also need the winbind package.

 Should winbind be included on the Suggests: line?

 Well, there are many use cases where there is no need for winbind,
 particularly when the samba server is a domain controller or a
 standalone server, or a print server.

 So, I'm not convinced that it is a good idea to suggest winbind.

I think it's a good idea to include it in Suggests, Christian's
arguments make sense for not including it in Recommends though.

Cheers

Luk

 Hi,

Hi

 ancina didn't seem to come back from the reboot after this last point

It's running, so I guess something network related broke. ARM guys, do
you have an idea where to look?

 The /pks/lookup?op=stats page should show some progress, right? I looked

 The changes in -2 are out of scope for the freeze IMO.

 Specifically I mean the open-vm-tools 2:8.8.0+2012.05.21-724730-2
 upload, with this changelog entry:

 open-vm-tools (2:8.8.0+2012.05.21-724730-2) unstable; urgency=low

   * Switching to xz compression.
   * Loading modules through kmod instead of initscript.
   * Adding sleep during restart in initscript.
   * Removing old dpkg trigger for update-initramfs.
   * Updating GPL boilerplate in copyright file.
   * Calling dh_dkms with version argument (Closes: #677503).

  -- Daniel Baumann daniel.baum...@progress-technologies.net  Sat, 30 Jun

 None of these items seem to be fixing RC or important bugs (at least if
 as I understood it the last one didn't actually fix the dkms package, so
 it needed a followup fix from Thijs. Specific enough?

The first one became a release goal AFAICS.

The second and the last were not enough, but are needed to fix the RC
bug AFAICS.

The sleep is a workaround as otherwise people need to refrain from using
restart. Which is an unfiled RC bug AFAICT.

The GPL one is not just the boilerplate, but also fixing the copyright
of some files. Which certainly can be seen as RC AFAICT.

So the only one I could see you argue about, is the one about the
initramfs or am I missing something?

 I think the original intention was that an unblock request was for a
 package that followed the freeze policy whereas an exception was for
 packages that required, well, an exception. Hopefully someone who was
 more involved at the time will correct me if I'm mistaken.

Indeed, that was the initial intention. The idea was that less active
members could easily help with unblock requests while freeze exceptions
could need more time to review and to follow afterwards so could be
skipped by release team members who did not have the necessary time to
do them. In practice it has never been used in that way though.

 In terms of those processing the requests for wheezy, the basic answer
 is absolutely nothing. Indeed, there's been suggestions of dropping
 the f-e tag.

In practice the same was true for earlier releases.

Re: Hijacking packages for fun and profit BoF at DebConf

2012-07-21 Thread Luk Claes

 Other than all the above, I have read interesting ideas on objective criteria
 in Steve McIntyre's report. Basically my point of this e-mail is that I
 welcome a debate on changing the MIA and NMU procedures to introduce objective
 criteria with short periods of time so that it becomes easier for anyone
 interested to improve quality of packages in Debian.

Taking over a package is not an NMU nor is it waiting for someone to be
completely MIA. An NMU is usually once for fixing bugs (so not updating
packaging, not moving it to another patch or revision control system and
the like). Being MIA is usually not even answering mails or IRC pings in
general for an extended time frame which is quite a bit further than not
caring about one package IMHO. Currently the MIA Team does not orphan
individual packages unless the maintainer agrees, so usually it's
orphaning all or none.

The normal procedure to take over a package should be consent with the
maintainer or the formal adoption procedure. Though I think it would be
good to also be able to take over a package without the need to declare
the maintainer MIA. One month without reply to an intent to take over
mail (or should that be bug report?) seems fair when the maintainer is
not on VAC (which usually is private), so I guess the devil is in the
details.

bug#12020: ls should show when extended system attributes are set

2012-07-21 Thread Luk Claes
Hi

Currently when using POSIX acls, this is not visible when listing files
with ls. This means that users and system administrators cannot easily
see when (non trivial) POSIX acls are in use which obviously can result
in wrong expectations when only seeing the rwx kind of acls.

At a minimum I would like that ls would show that extended system
attributes are being used (maybe by showing something different than -
for the type of file?).

Cheers

Luk

 What version of coreutils are you using, and on what distro?

I'm using Debian, version 8.13

 At a minimum I would like that ls would show that extended system
 attributes are being used (maybe by showing something different than -
 for the type of file?).

 But ls _does_ already do that.

 Notice how the 11th character changed from '+' (ACL present) to '.'
 (SELinux label present)? That is, a trailing '+' is already what
 coreutils uses to indicate the presence of ACLs (which generally provide
 additional rights); and a trailing '.' indicates the presence of
 restrictions (SELinux labels typically restrict rights depending on the
 labeling of the calling context). On systems with neither ACLs nor
 SELinux labels, then the 11th character is ' ' (space) to indicate no
 other special permissions.

Nice, though in that case it does apparently not vanish when I only
remove the non-trivial acl again and keep the mask:

$ getfacl foo
# file: foo
# owner: luk
# group: luk
user::rw-
user:mongodb:rw-
group::r--
mask::rw-
other::r--

$ ls -l foo
-rw-rw-r--+ 1 luk luk 5 Jul 22 00:37 foo

$ setfacl -x u:mongodb foo

$ ls -l foo
-rw-r--r--+ 1 luk luk 5 Jul 22 00:37 foo

$ getfacl foo
# file: foo
# owner: luk
# group: luk
user::rw-
group::r--
mask::r--
other::r--

Though I guess it's close enough, only a pitty it's not in the manpage.
So feel free to close this or retarget it.

Cheers

Luk

Hi

The package fails to build due to needing fbasics which does not build
because of 'gcc: error: SHLIB_LIBADD: No such file or directory'. Which

Bug#662746: mingw32-ocaml: fails to upgrade from squeeze

2012-07-04 Thread Luk Claes
Hi

Fixing this bug either means getting rid of the conflict in the
binutils-mingw-w64 packages (and probably have replaces with breaks
instead) or having mingw32-ocaml depend on mingw32 instead of mingw-w64
(through mingw-ocaml).

Cheers

Luk

 Thanks. However, I am surprised you have been able to compile it
 because of the bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=676080

 I had fixed 677494 locally but could not fix 676080 yet.

676080 is not reproducible in unstable, so probably it is actually
caused by another package that got fixed in unstable in the mean time.

Cheers

Luk

Bug#662746: mingw32-ocaml: fails to upgrade from squeeze

2012-07-04 Thread Luk Claes
Hi

Fixing this bug either means getting rid of the conflict in the
binutils-mingw-w64 packages (and probably have replaces with breaks
instead) or having mingw32-ocaml depend on mingw32 instead of mingw-w64
(through mingw-ocaml).

Cheers

Luk
